Michael T. Costain
With a career spanning over three decades in the entertainment industry, IATSE Union member Michael T. Costain has held a four year post with the New York City Opera Makeup Department, in addition to designing and building wigs, designing makeup, masks, and Special Effects makeup and prosthetics for Broadway, Opera, Ballet and Regional Theatre companies in and abroad.
Michael’s credits include building and designing several Drama Desk, Critic Circle, Pulitzer Prize, Tony and Obie Award winning dramatic plays including;
Tina Howe’s PRIDE’S CROSSING which won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play and was a finalist for the 1997 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This production was directed by Jack O’Brien, and performed at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre at the Lincoln Center Theatre.
GOLDEN CHILD the Obie Award-winning play by American playwright David Henry Hwang performed at the Joseph Papp Public Theater, directed by James Lapine, starring Tsai Chin and Jodi Long. GOLDEN CHILD was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play.
The Broadway Revival of GUYS & DOLLS performed at the Martin Beck Theatre. Directed by Jerry Zaks and starring Nathan Lane, Peter Gallagher, and Faith Prince. This production won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical and also won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival.
Michael was also the 2007 Keynote Speaker for the USITT Conference. (USITT: Association of design, production and technology professionals in the entertainment industry).
Michael received his BFA in Theater from the University of Hawaii, and his MFA in Design from Brandies University. He has also studied at the San Francisco Opera Wig and Makeup Training Program, and the Non-surgical Hair replacement with the American Hair-loss Council.
